The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) has set a compliance deadline of January 1, 2025, for all ATMs to implement the TR-31 key block standard. This mandate enhances the security of PINs and sensitive data during transactions by requiring:
Upgraded Encrypting PIN Pads (EPPs): ATMs must be equipped with EPPs that support TR-31 key block encryption. Machines with older EPPs may need hardware replacements to meet this requirement.
Updated Firmware and Software: In addition to hardware upgrades, ATMs require software updates to ensure full compliance with the TR-31 standard. This includes installing the latest OEM firmware compatible with the new encryption protocols.
Failure to comply by the January 1, 2025, deadline may result in ATMs being unable to process transactions, as host processors will reject transactions from non-compliant machines. To avoid service disruptions, it's crucial to assess your ATM fleet promptly to determine necessary upgrades and/or machine replacements.
