RESETTING ATM PASSWORDS: Having the ability to reset ATM passwords is vital to both experienced and new ATM technicians alike. Say someone’s getting out of the ATM business and has an ATM for sale—you buy an ATM used and the former owner no longer has the password. Or say the ATM has an issue where it’s not recognizing your passwords, or you just plain forgot the ATM passwords. Or say you encounter the pesky
FFFFFF – NVRAM is broken error code. Operator function password resets resolve these ATM issues.
This guide will briefly cover resetting Operator Function passwords on Hantle, GenMega, and Hyosung retail ATMs. It’s important to note these methods will reset just Operator Function passwords, will not reset Key Management passwords.
***In all instances, resetting the Operator Function passwords to the machine will clear out programming. You’ll want to be sure you have all information needed to completely reprogram the machine, potentially including master keys, before performing password resets***
+++QUICK INFO ON OPERATOR FUNCTION PASSWORDS:
On Hantle, GenMega, and Hyosung retail machines, the Operator Function has three different passwords, each with different levels of functionality. Each machine has a Master, Service, and Operator password. The Master password allows you to make any changes with the machine programming. Service and Operator passwords have lower levels of functionality—for example, Service and Operator passwords won’t allow changing some of the Host Setup functions. The idea behind this, say you own an ATM and someone else fills it. You don’t want the cash loader to have the ability to change the TID or host information. Essentially Service and Operator passwords allow loading cash and performing minimal functions on the machines.
+++HANTLE/GENMEGA MACHINESIf you’re running a GenMega or Hantle machine, the only way to reset passwords is via a full software load.
With older machines (1700, E4000), this must be done using a specialized data cable and laptop at the site. As this is a bit of an involved process, we strongly recommend pulling the main board and sending the board in for repair. You can submit work orders with ATMequipment.com’s certified repair department
HERE.
With newer Hantle/GenMega machines (1700W, 1900, 2500, Onyx, C4000), the passwords can be reset by performing a full software reload using an SD card (or USB if your machine is new enough to have an ACU6 main board). A full software load completely reloads software on the machine, restoring everything back to factory defaults, including Operator Function passwords.
ATMequipment.com has software for all machines available for download
HERE. Again, please keep in mind a full software load will completely reload software, so this will clear out all programming on the machine and reset all settings back to factory default so you’ll want to be prepared to completely reprogram the machine (with Hantle/GenMega machines, typically you won’t need to re-enter master keys after a full software load).

HYOSUNG ATMS:
Hyosung retail machines are going to be a bit different when it comes to resetting passwords. For non-legacy machines (legacy machines would include the 1500, 1800, and 2100T), Hyosung AP software comes with a built in way to reset the passwords back to factory defaults. With legacy machines, there’s not really a way for a tech to reset the password back to defaults in the field. In these instances, the main board will need to be pulled and sent in for repair. Information on all machine types can be found below.
LEGACY MACHINES (1500, 1800, 2100T):
Unfortunately, as these machines are older pieces of hardware, the only way to reset the passwords on these machines is via a full software load. These machines were built before the ability to reload software via an SD cards was implemented; loading software on these machines must be done via a specialized program. The board can be sent into ATMequipment.com’s repair department for password resets, and you can submit a work order with our certified repair department
HERE.
CE GENERATION MACHINES (1800CE, 5000CE, 5300CE):
The passwords to these machines can be reset on site, though it is a bit contingent upon what software version your machine is running (see below note on software versions). You’ll need to start with the vault door open and the machine powered off (the ATM has to recognize that the vault door is open; see below note on vault door switches).
With the vault door open, power on the machine while holding down F1 and F2 (the top two function keys on the left side of the screen). The ATM will go through a bit of its boot sequence and should come up to a screen asking you to confirm that you want to reset passwords. It’s a bit of a hassle to hold down the keys, don’t let your hand get too cramped—and with thirty seconds, the ATM should come up to a screen that asks you if you’re sure you want to reset your passwords. Select yes. The ATM will reboot and when it comes back up, operator function passwords will be reset to default. This will clear out all of your programming.
SE GENERATION MACHINES (1800SE, 2700CE, HALO, HALO II, 5000SE, 4000W): With the vault door open, power on the machine. Fortunately with this one, there’s no need to cramp your hand holding down buttons while the machine boots. Allow the machine to go through its boot sequence. Eventually the machine will come to a screen that says PLEASE WAIT WHILE INITIALIZING (there’s a screen right before this that says PLEASE WAIT WHILE LOADING—a password reset will not work on this screen).
When the machine says PLEASE WAIT WHILE INITIALIZING, in sequence on the keypad press CLEAR LEFT RIGHT CLEAR CLEAR CANCEL. If successfully recognized, the machine will ask you if you’re sure you want to reset the password. Again, this will clear out all your programming, including master keys, so be sure you’re ready to start from scratch to get the machine back into service.
+++DEFAULT PASSWORDS: When machine passwords are reset to default, they should be as follows:
HYOSUNG: MASTER:
555555
SERVICE:
222222
OPERATOR:
111111
HANTLE/GENMEGA:MASTER:
555555
SERVICE:
111111
OPERATOR:
222222
+++POTENTIAL ISSUES WHEN ATTEMPTING PASSWORD RESETS:
A note on software versions: In recent software versions, Hyosung has implemented a security feature where the Operator Function passwords cannot be reset unless performed during the machine’s first boot after a full boot loader, after completely reloading software on the machine. If your machine is currently running a software version at or above this cutoff the steps described above will not reset the passwords to the machine until software has been completely reloaded.
SE machines: V06.01.11 released 11/19/2014
CE machines: v01.04.19 released 12/19/2014
To reload software, you’ll need an SD card 2GB or less. Software downloads for all machines can be found
HERE.
After completely reloading software, you should be able to reset the passwords back to default using the above described methods.
A note on vault door switches:
Vault door switches have three different positions on the machine: 1. the switch is pressed and held in by the vault door. 2. The switch pops out to its naturally resting position. 3. The vault door switch is pulled out as far as it will go, until it clicks out. This causes the ATM to register the vault door as closed, the idea being a technician can pull the switch out to this position and let it sit here while working on the ATM without having to tape the switch down. With Hyosung password resets, the ATM has to recognize the vault door switch as open, so the switch needs to be in its naturally resting position.
